====================================================================

It was a splendid and more than deserved Palme d'Or that awarded to A Family Affair (Shoplifters), the prize to Japan, 21 years after Shohei Imamura's Eel. It has an emblematic title, the latest work by Kore-eda Hirokazu, author since 1995 of his magnificent debut with Maborosi of a sequel of masterpieces or almost: such as After Life, Nobody Knows, Still Walking and Father and Son. For the fifth time in Cannes, Kore-Eda is not only the delicate filmmaker of an emotion that reaches its peak here. But a chiseller like few others in the family cell, a poet of filiation, of even conflictual relationships between generations. Or, as here, of a solidarity that spreads in the core of the story: A family affair is invented in this way, with an extraordinary humor and grace, on the margins of Japanese society.

The always surprising Kirin Kiki is the old woman who lives with her pension; between joys and sorrows, in her modest apartment, responding to the idea of an existence not based on moral and social impositions. Rather, in the minimalism of a choice that is perhaps melancholic, but how delicate. With that couple made up of a construction worker and a laundry employee, the student sister who "works" in the red light room, a young boy found abandoned in a car. Singular together, not least because it is devoid of any blood ties.

Finally the little girl, picked up on the street and perhaps abandoned by her parents; and to whom the healthy principles of the "shoplifter" will be inculcated. The shoplifter, that is, as responsible for family survival; the petty thief, in short, but the builder of a vital center. For a serene life, out of the clichés imposed by society: destined to break down, when the laws of the latter come to obscure the ephemeral glow of those fireworks in the sky of Tokyo.
