Cinema, like other businesses revolving around it, is in crisis. Yet, from a film signed by one of its greatest exponents, conditioned in its theatrical screening by a running time of almost three and a half hours in the era of rampant television series, costing $200 million, no one expected it to gross $88 million in its first two weeks of worldwide screenings.

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is a film about a theme as old as the Indians, here the Osages of Oklahoma in the 1920s, left more or less alone, but only until the discovery of oil and, if you like, capitalism. Shot by an eighty-year-old director who has sculpted modern cinema with his melodramas and detective stories, Martin Scorsese had never directed a western. And Leonardo DiCaprio, it must be said, for his part bought back the script from the producer who no longer felt like financing it. All this allowed Scorsese to recompose on screen one of his favourite couples. De Niro and DiCaprio, whom the director of GOODFELLAS, CASINO and THE IRISHMAN (to name the three films that have some similarities with the latter) had never had the opportunity to direct at the same time.

From this matrix, at once traditional and innovative, one can extract the three strands that will sustain the film, inspired by the impressiveness of David Grann's literary source. And on which will rely the important screenplay signed by the increasingly expert hand of Erich Roth, six-time Oscar nominee and trusted screenwriter of Fincher, Villeneuve, Bradley Cooper, Spielberg, Mann, Redford...

Three themes, then, three tales, three atmospheres that lead the spectator to the genocidal madness that struck the Osage Indians: but at the same time broaden the reflection on the events that lead, one hundred years later, to our times. Racism, greed, ignorance expand in this sense the political significance and responsibilities of the judges, the media, the bankers, the industrialists that will structure society over time, not only American. The film will then be the one that Scorsese has always modelled, the mafia violence and ignorance of power, in this case that which will lead to the deprivation, the 1920s and 1930s, of the legitimate owners of the oil lands.

It is then the second look that Scorsese takes, merging it with the tragic fates of Mollie Hale's sisters. Played by a Lily Gladstone who remained until the age of eleven on a Montana reservation, now at thirty-seven almost a debutante to hold her own against a Leonardo Di Caprio, as good as he is a little mindful of Marlon Brando's mask. Mollie is extraordinary because she is rare; she counts on the expressiveness of her gaze alone to insinuate herself definitively into the spectator's identification process.

The third strand, next to the definitive consecration of a villainous and impeccable Robert De Niro, is the investigation conducted in those years by the nascent FBI of the future Hoover, Scorsese's expert and not yet tarnished hand in denouncing not so much a gang of poor people. But the more useful if not merely amusing one of an America fragilised by its own power, justice, the media, doctors, lawyers, bankers and industrialists. And it is in that sense that Scorsese's gaze is not only that of a formidable and relaxed octogenarian: but of a historian, perhaps of a politician, of a master of melodrama, perhaps of the film manip
