Attention is growing for what is being discovered as a particular cinematic vision. It's that of Jonas Carpignano, the Italian-American director who made a name for himself at the recent Cannes Quinzaine and has now been released in cinemas with A Chiara, thus completing the trilogy shot starting in 2015 in Goia Tauro and consisting of Mediterraneo and A Ciambra.

Someone who knows a lot about the subject, such as Carpignano's Martin Scorsese, had already noticed: and the confirmation, in some sensational ways, now comes with this story of a young girl who discovers only at the age of fifteen how her beloved parent is involved in the trafficking of the local 'ndrangheta.

The subject is not new. But as always, and not only in cinema, what counts is the "way" used by the young filmmaker, who returned from New York to Calabria to stay for ten years. Carpignano does not reveal many things that we are unaware of, but he makes his film by merging two modes that are not so easy to unite: that of the documentary filmmaker with that of the inventor of fiction. The protagonist of the previous, more than interesting A Ciambra was already illiterate: and the director had to explain to him every morning what he was supposed to interpret. Not very different, the world of (small, but precisely for this reason authentic) criminality with which the protagonist of A Chiara is progressively confronted is played by non-professional actors. They are part of Swamy Rotolo's real family, with whom she has relations that we soon realise are authentic in their unexpected and uncontrolled ways. An explosive family micro-world that the long opening sequence of an overflowing birthday party almost imposes on the spectator, and that Carpignano will then insert into a narrative structure he has drawn up himself.

Small workers; in the image, but only in appearance, of Carpignano's gaze: far from the epic dimension of that of a film like Gomorra by Matteo Garrone and Roberto Saviano. Not to mention the abnormal one which, after uprooting itself a century ago from the confidential realities of Gioia Tauro, crossed the oceans to build the glittering Hollywood dimension. The talented Swamy Rotolo will cross ancestral realities: it is up to Jonas Carpignano to bring them back to the dimensions of the present.
