STEVEN SODERBERGH

_______________________________________________________________________

Over time, have we somewhat forgotten about him? Perhaps, because of the peculiarities that help make an emeritus card shuffler like Steven Soderbergh the indispensable sure-fire value of American cinema?

It all stems from his now distant 1982 debut as a 26-year-old at Cannes, thanks to the Palme d’Or for SEX LIFE AND VIDEO TAPE… The first of those peculiarities is the ability to change skin with each new film: changing not only the genre, but the tone, the ambition, the target audience. Capable of going from subtly disturbing films like OUT OF SIGHT (1998) to the wonderful noir THE ENGLISH (THE LIMEY) of 1999, to the melancholic reflections of SOLARIS. And again, ignored authorial pearls, BUBBLE in 2005, or perhaps slightly greedy projects like THE INFORMANT. Finally, popular successes, the cleverly crafted TRAFFIC or the more hurried series of the various OCEAN’S.

But the art of the turnabout on the borders of immoral provocation, which is rather unusual in American cinema, Soderbergh also exercises within his stories. BLACK BAG – DOUBLE GAME starts off in one direction, initiates the viewer into a sequel of more or less hypothetical leads, only to turn back into question by leading into dimensions quite different from those at the beginning. If SIDE EFFECTS (2013) was one of his most successful efforts, it was precisely because of the radical skill with which he managed one of his magic tricks, made up of unscrupulous inventiveness when it comes to designing the film on paper. But also of impeccable directorial mastery, when the cheerful paradox must stand on the implacable evidence of the images.

And so, as in other works of “social” denunciation (TRAFFIC, ERIN BROCKOVICH, CONTAGION), Rooney Mara’s fragile and subtly mutable grace (what a difference from her role in MILLENIUM!) invites us to perfectly identify with those characters caught in the snare… The husband who gets out of prison, a depression that looms to the extreme consequences, the psychiatrist who relies on the nonchalant use of psychotropic drugs.

But the side effects illustrated by Soderbergh, as well as the film’s moral intentions with regard to a malaise that from the apexes of medical power penetrates into the intimacy of families, clamorously turn elsewhere. Not only the good and the bad to be questioned, not only the denunciation of a particularly odious profit industry, but a paradoxical psychological thriller. In the end, that of BLACK BAG – DOUBLE GAME appears as a perfectly guided ensemble of actors, a directorial gaze always ready to underline the ambiguity of appearances. Under the meticulous environmental exactitude that makes the white always blacker, the reliable more doubtful, the pleasantness of certainties less consoling. An interlocking game that fascinates and sometimes creaks: but in which true cinema plays wonderfully.
