IL DIAVOLO VESTE PRADA 2 (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2)

FOR ENGLISH VERSION SEE BELOW

Winner of the Grand Prix at the last Cannes Film Festival, which was particularly rich in tempting contenders, and Best Actor at the 2025 Golden Globes, the ever-memorable Stellan Skarsgård, SENTIMENTAL VALUE confirms what we already knew: Norwegian director Joachim Trier is approaching the cinematic heights of the last decade.
He does so in a story where no one makes the effort to avoid extra emotional sequences, possibly justifying the fact that he has experienced them in crescendo in all his previous films (OSLO, 31 AUGUST, LOUDER THAN BOMBS), almost attracting them, in a perverse but undoubtedly successful game, in the company of a story in which both protagonists and spectators are entangled (possibly silent, but fascinating).
SENTIMENTAL VALUE then makes use of an apparently solid physical base, an old, fragile wooden house, for a family to reunite on the outskirts of Oslo. At the funeral of their psychoanalyst mother, the two sisters, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and the divine Renate Reinsve, complicate the energy of the formidable female presence when Rachel Kemp (the latest American star) joins them.
Then, to everyone’s astonished surprise, Gustav Borg, the father, who had disappeared from home many years ago to devote himself to cinema, even though he was now inactive, appears… Stellan Skarsgård, a 70-year-old director, with a screenplay (or a suicide note?) in his hands and the desire, to say the least, to meet the older of the two sisters, Nora, the successful actress, and convince her to star in a film, perhaps born of a raison d’être that has become increasingly overwhelming. A kind of life or death situation, still to be faced.
SENTIMENTAL VALUE is certainly not intended to resolve this dispute, which has been transformed by Gustav’s comings and goings. But it would add something to that captivating Norwegian atmosphere, while the incomparable profiles of Chekhov and Ingmar Bergman emerge…
