For those who created and relived it, LE ASSAGGIATRICI is a dystopian film. Extending it, Silvio Soldini with his four actresses, Rosella Pastorino author of the book that inspired the film, Renato Berta, the timeless director of photography, and last but not least the revealing costumes by Esmé Sciaroni underline it from the first images. A story of love and death, sounding a powerful and highly topical alarm about dictators. And Soldini’s film is then inspired by the hitherto ignored story of Margot Wölk, the sole survivor of the tastemakers, who died aged over ninety.

Dystopian is an imaginary society, characterised by dehumanisation and oppression, in a bleak and totalitarian future, environmentally degraded.

The film then reconstructs the true story of Margot Wölk, Hitler’s taster in the Krausendorf barracks: ‘My body had absorbed the Führer’s food, the Führer’s food circulated in my blood, Hitler was safe. I was hungry again* .
The first time Rosa Sauer enters the room where she is to eat her next meal, she is hungry. ‘We had been hungry and afraid for years,’ she says.

It is autumn 1943, in Gross-Partsch, a village near the Wolf’s Lair, Hitler’s hiding place. She is twenty-six years old, Rosa, and has arrived from Berlin a week earlier. The SS lay a delicious dish before her eyes: eat, they say. And hunger gets the better of fear, fear itself becomes hunger.

To the author of UN’ANIMA DIVISA IN DUE, of LE ACROBATE, but ever since his first L’ARIA SERENA DELL’OVEST, it has always happened that he has been moving along demure mosaics, routes constructed with precious stylistic sensitivity. Symmetrical links, more and more secret, almost metaphysical: as ends up happening in this latest feature film of his. Mosaics that work more chorally rather than on the track of a true dramatic progression. Always solicited by the actors, whom we feel are close to a filmmaker who is emotionally involved (observe here the progression of Elisa Schlott…), even behind the demands of his own expressive quality.
